Pic: Steve Gurney 1999. The ‘History’ Peak to Peak. New Zealand’s longest running winter multi sport event is approaching its 23rd year celebration. Over this period the race has seen the best of the New Zealand multisport athletes race from the Remarkables to Coronet Peak.
With the ski fields opening this weekend we are of course getting rain, but snow is forecast Sunday.
Last year I raced the Peak to Peak Multisport Race. Held in Queenstown New Zealand, this race traverses the Wakatipu Basin from the upper reaches of the Remarkable’s ski field to the Coronet Peak ski area, hence the name; Peak to Peak.
We have the best coverage for the start of June - hope it continues all season.
As the rain eased away the cold air from the south enabled a dusting of snow to cover the top slopes of the Remarkables this morning. A sign perhaps that winter is on the way, although Dave Crow (the Queenstown weather guru) predicts a late start to the season, but that it will be a good one. "I think it will be into June before there is much snow on the mountains"
I have got a Ruahine Swallow multisport kayak to sell for anyone who wants an inexpensive but fast intermediate kayak for the P2P. It is a few years old and has had some epoxy repairs but is fully watertight. Pickup would be in Wanaka during the week before the race or I could deliver to Queenstown. Price is $300 kayak only, $400 with a Canoe Sports 2000/160 paddle or $500 with a Legend carbon wing paddle. Any questions/want to see some photos please contact me by email - email@example.com.
