The Remarkables road has been sealed to the 1okm mark and more than one or two people have been riding the new addition to the 'cols' of Queenstown.
But the question I have been getting is how does this affect the Peak to Peak and the downhill riding - so here you go.........
The Peak to Peak downhill ride starts normally at the 11.5km mark (bottom of Homeward Bound) and so there is then 1.5kms of rough gravel riding to do before the tarseal starts. Which bike then ? Well in my mind the mtn bike is still the weapon of choice, although a cross bike might work quite well.
The road even at the moment has some grit on it and the road bikes don't come into their own until the 4km mark (where the road has been tarsealed to for the last couple years) and then a road bike is best. And of course from the bottom of the mountain road to the Frankton Beach a road bike is best.
So the choice is yours to make - but 'only one bike is the rule that applies'.
